Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) classes are now being provided as part of the general education curriculum at the John F. Ryan School. Lessons are developed based on the Social Thinking Curriculum by Michelle Garcia Winner (including: The Zones of Regulation, Think Social, Superflex) as well as through other resources). Fifth Grade: September is the Flexible Thinking month for fifth graders. Students read: Superflex Takes on Rock Brain and the Team of Unthinkables. The students participated in several role-plays of "flexible" and "inflexible" moments. Examples included: I only want to eat pizza for dinner. I only want to play my XBOX. I only want to be partners with so-and-so.  In October and November we worked on matching up problems to the appropriate size reaction size. We will be labeling problems "Big" "Medium" and "Small."
